CARSON : Man Held After Allegedly Threatening to Kill Family

A Carson man was in custody Monday after allegedly threatening to kill his family with what he falsely claimed was an explosive device, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Mack Wayne Parker, 54, was booked for falsely reporting a bomb, making terrorist threats and abusing a cohabitant, said sheriff’s spokesman Matt Rodriguez. He was being held on $150,000 bail.

About 9:40 Sunday night, deputies got a 911 call reporting that Parker was inside his residence in the 100 block of East 215th Street, “armed with a shotgun and threatening to kill his family with a hand grenade,” Rodriguez said.

Parker’s daughter and granddaughter told deputies that the family had been involved in a loud argument, apparently involving their fiances, one of whom was hiding in the house, Rodriguez said.

Parker’s bedridden wife also was in the house. About five dozen residents were evacuated from their nearby homes and a bomb squad was summoned.

About 2 a.m., Parker was talked into surrendering. The bomb squad then determined that the device was a military smoke grenade and not an explosive, Rodriguez said.
