Ramsey Jay
SCHOOL: Ventura
SPORT: Track and field
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Jay set a Ventura County record of 47.49 seconds to place fourth in the 400 meters in last year’s State championships, but he was having an unspectacular season by his standards through mid-April. Although he led the region in the 400 at 48.37 and ranked second in the 200 at 21.8, he had not performed well in big meets.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Jay won the 100 in a wind-aided 10.3 and the 200 in 21.9 on Thursday to help Ventura clinch its fourth consecutive Channel League title. On Saturday, he won the 100 in 10.83 and anchored the Cougars’ 400-meter (43.34) and sprint medley (1 minute 36.03 seconds) relay teams to come-from-behind victories in the Spartan Relays at Rio Mesa. “I think he’s coming around at the right time,” Ventura Coach Hudson Scoggin said. “I’m hoping at the State meet that he’ll run 46.5, at least.”
