COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL : UCLA Rolls Into Rematch With Hawaii

The UCLA men’s volleyball team was nearly flawless Friday night, taking only 58 minutes to defeat Brigham Young, 15-3, 15-4, 15-5, in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament at Pauley Pavilion.
In the other semifinal, a spirited Hawaii (19-5) team defeated UC Santa Barbara (18-9), 15-10, 15-13, 15-7, which means the nation’s top two teams will meet in tonight’s final.
Top-ranked UCLA will play No. 2 Hawaii tonight at 7 with the tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA final four next Friday and Saturday at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., on the line. The runner-up is expected to receive an at-large bid.
Kevin Wong came out especially strong for UCLA (28-1). He had four kills to go with UCLA’s four aces in a quick first-game victory. UCLA never slowed after that, serving eight aces and hitting .386 in winning its 33rd-consecutive home match before 1,856. Wong finished with 10 kills and Paul Nihipali led UCLA with 13.
No. 8 Brigham Young (14-8) hit .000 with 29 kills and 29 errors in 88 total attempts.
UCLA has defeated Hawaii twice this season, in four games at Hawaii on Jan. 26 and in five games at UCLA on Mar. 8.
