Under court order to go through with salary arbitration after spending nearly a year trying to eliminate the process, baseball owners exchanged figures with 39 players.
Angel designated hitter Chili Davis asked for the most at $5.1 million, while St. Louis pitcher Ken Hill asked for $5 million. Kansas City pitcher Kevin Appier asked for $4,725,000 and pitcher Ben McDonald of Baltimore asked for $4.5 million.
Arbitration hearings will take place from May 10 to June 30, but most players settle before their hearings.
Eight players agreed to one-year deals before the exchange of numbers.
Chicago White Sox pitcher Wilson Alvarez agreed to $2.2 million, more than seven times his $285,000 salary last season. Roberto Hernandez, another White Sox pitcher, agreed to $975,000, more than triple his $275,000 salary last year.
New York Met infielder Jose Vizcaino got $1,355,000, a raise of $505,000, and catcher Todd Hundley got $975,000, a raise of $125,000.
Toronto pitcher Al Leiter agreed to $795,000, a raise of $230,000, and Blue Jay third baseman Ed Sprague settled at $760,000, a raise of $260,000.
Chicago Cub infielder Rey Sanchez agreed to $675,000, triple his $225,000 salary last season. Boston pitcher Rheal Cormier agreed to $500,000, triple his $160,000 salary of last year.
