BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Davis’ Treadmill Test Not Encouraging

Chili Davis’ workout on a treadmill led to some stiffness in his injured hamstring and another cortisone injection Saturday. Manager Marcel Lachemann, who had expressed hope that his best hitter would be back in the lineup shortly after the All-Star break, said the news on Davis was “not good.”

“I’m not as optimistic as I was four or five days ago,” Lachemann said. “The original plan was to have him run on it Wednesday, but that’s going to be pushed back.”

Team medical director Lewis Yocum said the tightness was disappointing but not unexpected.

“We originally said three to six weeks and we’re just now coming up on three weeks,” Yocum said. “It’s just that Chili is getting antsy, he’s going crazy because he feels so good otherwise, and he probably pushed it a little.

“But that’s OK, that’s how you find out where you are.”

Yocum said it was conceivable that Davis, who has the second-best batting average in the majors, could be jogging by Wednesday, but Davis isn’t going to take anymore chances.

“I don’t want to ruin three weeks of work,” he said. “I’m just going to sit on my boat and relax, then we’re going to try it after the All-Star break. But if it’s not feeling right the first day back, or the first week back, I don’t want to go out there and rip it up. Then I’d have real trouble.”

The Angels acquired veteran reliever John Habyan from St. Louis Saturday in exchange for minor league outfielder Mark Sweeney and a player to be named.

Habyan, 31, was 3-2 with a 2.88 earned-run average in 31 games for the Cardinals this season.

Lachemann said the right-hander will add depth in the bullpen and could work both as a set-up man and in long relief. “He’s experienced in a number of roles,” Lachemann said.

Habyan will join the club July 13 in Detroit. Mike James and Russ Springer are the most likely candidates to be sent to Vancouver to make room on the roster unless the Angels, who play 18 games without an off day after the All- Star break, decide to go with an extra pitcher.

Sweeney, 25, was batting .345 with 59 runs batted in at triple-A Vancouver.

Pitcher Ben VanRyn has been designated for assignment to make room for Habyan on the 40-man roster.

Fashion update: Lee Smith mistakenly wore his All-Star game jersey, which has special All-Star game patches on the sleeves, Friday night. “It was the same color as everybody else’s,” Smith said. “I just grabbed it and put it on.”
