Seles Says She’s Ready to Return to Tour: ‘It’s Time to Have Fun’

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Looking tanned and relaxed, Monica Seles said Saturday she is ready to return to tournament tennis.
She said that perhaps the defining moment came recently in a conversation with her father, Karolj, also her coach. Seles said she was at home, suffering from lingering depression from being stabbed in the back during a changeover in a tournament at Hamburg, Germany, on April 30, 1993.
“He said, ‘Nothing in the world is worth it to me to see you this way.’ I decided then it was time to move on and forget what happened,” said Seles, who spent the day at the Special Olympics World Games, presenting medals and conducting clinics. “You have to live life. It’s time to have fun and play great tennis.
“I feel ready to play, physically and emotionally.”
Seles is preparing for a July 29 exhibition against Martina Navratilova at Atlantic City, happy that the match won’t carry with it the pressure of computer points. Next for her could be the U.S. Open at the end of August.
“I plan to play the Open,” she said. “I want to play the Open. I believe I can do it.”
