TORONTO — Manitoba jockey Todd Kabel, replaced by an American rider on one of the favorites, rode Kirk McLean’s Regal Discovery to a 1 1/4-length victory Sunday in the 136th Queen’s Plate at Woodbine.
Regal Discovery, sent off at 9-1, covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03 4/5 and paid $20.10 to win. Freedom Fleet, part of Frank Stronach’s three-horse entry, finished second and Mt. Sassafras was third in the 14-horse field.
Kabel had ridden Freedom Fleet and Stronach’s All Firmed Up in previous races, including a victory in the Plate Trial with All Firmed Up.
But Stronach brought in Mike Smith to ride Freedom Fleet and Shane Sellers to handle All Firmed Up.
