REASON TO WAVE: They’re celebrating big at Dana Point-based Surfer magazine this week. Its 35th anniversary issue--also its biggest, at 244 pages--is at newsstands now. Also, magazine founder John Severson will be among the inductees into the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame today. . . . Surfer editor Steve Hawk praises its former owner: “John ranks with ‘Endless Summer’ and mass-produced foam surfboards in early influence on the sport. The magazine was the first place for surfers to come together and talk to each other.”

ROCKY WAVES: Expect the outrageous when KROQ-FM (106.7) radio’s Kevin and Bean show up. The popular morning duo has been busy this week bashing O.J. Simpson, station management and even its own producer’s wife. . . . On Friday, they’ll broadcast from 5:30 to 10 a.m. from a Huntington Beach Dairy Queen near the U.S. Open of Surfing. Early fans get free ice cream, and the duo will serve up its own intern, Tad. . . . Says producer Frank Murphy: “We’ll mark off sections of his body like a side of beef. People can rub Paba [sunscreen] on him for a [charity] donation.”

DISCOVER IRVINE: Has the movie “Apollo 13” whetted your interest in astronauts? The U.S. Postal Service is bringing astronaut Janice Voss to the Irvine Marriott hotel Friday to kick off a three-day stamp show. The connection: release of a new $10.75 Express Mail stamp, which depicts the latest space shuttle Endeavour. . . . Voss, a crew member on the recent Discovery space shuttle, will chat with fans and sign autographs.

RIGHT UNIFORM: Count on a standing ovation for Jim Abbott when he takes the mound at the Big A tonight (C1), his home debut as a returning Angel. But it wasn’t his favorite place as an ex-Angel. . . . In his first game there after his 1993 trade to New York, he gave up a home run to Tim Salmon leading off the Angels’ ninth to lose, 3-2. With fireworks blasting overhead, Abbott mistakenly called for another ball. He said later: “I guess I’m used to being on the home team here.”
