COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Beats Fullerton for First Big West Volleyball Victory

Senior Popi Edwards had 23 kills as UC Irvine defeated Cal State Fullerton, 8-15, 8-15, 15-8, 15-12, 15-11, Saturday night at the Bren Center for its first Big West Conference victory of the season.
Freshman Anastasia Paveloff added a career-high 15 kills for the Anteaters.
Heather Bassett had 24 kills and Shelly Smith 22 for the Titans (5-10, 0-5). The Anteaters (3-9, 1-5) broke an eight-match losing streak.
In another Big West Conference match:
UC Santa Barbara 3, Long Beach State 2--Jennifer Kaylor had 15 kills for UCSB (12-4, 5-0), which won, 15-10, 7-15, 15-9, 10-15, 15-8. Brita Schwerm had 19 kills and Kristy Kierulff 17 for Long Beach State (9-2, 4-1).
In Golden State Athletic Conference volleyball:
Cal Baptist 3, Southern California College 0--Shari Stegall had 11 kills to lead Cal Baptist (9-5, 3-3), 15-8, 15-5, 15-5.
Christine Heims had nine kills for Southern California College.
At the Northern California water polo tournament:
Anteaters split with Davis, Stanford--Less than 24 hours after upsetting third-ranked Stanford, 7-6, sixth-ranked UCI was defeated by the Cardinal, 9-5, at Berkeley.
The Anteaters (6-4) were led by Matt Maunz and Ryan Bailey with two goals each and goalkeeper Tom Davis with 11 saves.
UCI defeated UC Davis, 11-4, earlier in the day as Maunz had four goals and Omar Amr two.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:
Westmont 1, Southern California College 0--Todd Emblem scored in the 85th minute to give visiting Westmont (6-1-2, 1-0) the victory in a conference opener.
In nonconference women’s soccer:
Southern California College 1, The Master’s 0--Megan Conner scored on an assist from Meggen Fleener in the second half and Amy Lewis had four saves for SCC (8-3).
At the Fresno Golf Classic:
UC Irvine finishes 17th--Jesse Lanham finished 24th with a total of 219 as UCI finished 17th at the Fresno Lexus Gold Championship at Belmont Country Club. The Anteaters finished with a total of 898 strokes, 51 behind first-place USC (847). San Jose State finished second with 858 strokes.
San Jose State’s Arron Oberholser shot five-under par 67 to win the individual title with a score of 201.
UC Irvine’s Kevin Yamauchi was 65th (224).
At the Stanford cross-country invitational:
Stanford wins men’s and women’s events--The Stanford women’s team had three runners finish in the top five to win at the Stanford University Golf Course. Mary Cobb finished first for Stanford with a time of 17:10 over 5,000 meters.
UC Irvine finished fourth. Laura Monson was the top finisher for the Anteaters, finishing 16th with a time of 17:59.
The sixth-ranked Stanford men’s team also won, scoring 53 points. Northern Arizona finished second with 61 points.
California’s Richie Boulet won the men’s race with a time 24:28 over 8,000 meters.
