Fortune, O’Mara Try to Rebound in Feature

George O’Mara and Justin Fortune, heavyweights who lost their last bouts against big-name opponents, will square off in the 10-round co-main event of the boxing show Oct. 25 at the Warner Center Marriott.

O’Mara (16-16-1), a part-time actor from Van Nuys, lost a unanimous decision to former heavyweight champion Mike Weaver in a bout for the National Boxing Assn. title in July.

Fortune (11-3-1) of Australia is coming off a loss to former world champion Lennox Lewis.

In the other headline bout, Gary Ballard meets Esteban Cervantes in a 10-round light-heavyweight fight.

Basketball

Tawnee Cooper, The Times’ Ventura County player of the year in 1995, has committed to UC Santa Barbara, Simi Valley High Coach Dave Murphy said Tuesday.

Cooper, a 5-9 shooting guard, averaged 20.7 points last season, second best in the region.

The Cal Lutheran women’s team is ranked 12th in the preseason Division III computerized ratings by Columbus Multimedia.

An officials’ clinic sponsored by the Pacific-10 Conference has been scheduled for Saturday at UCLA’s John Wooden Center.

The clinic runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes a scrimmage by UCLA’s defending national champions. Registration is $25.

Former Moorpark College receiver Curtis Marsh has been activated by the Jacksonville Jaguars and will be eligible for Sunday’s NFL game against Cleveland.

Paul Ladin of Westlake Village parred the 415-yard, par-4 first hole to win a playoff Tuesday with Bud Bradley of Santa Monica and capture the 18th Southern California Golf Assn. Senior Amateur Championship at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara.
