Twenty-two high school students from across Orange County are new graduates of a nine-month-long cultural-awareness program sponsored by the local chapter of Links, a nonprofit organization that works to help young African Americans.
Maxine Jackson of Yorba Linda, Orange County chairwoman of the training program, said a committee selects students from nominations made by schools, social groups and program alumni. The students, who are all juniors in high school, then attend one meeting a month.
“We have workshops on personal development, cultural awareness, cultural diversity and social awareness,” Jackson said.
Peggy Boatright of Villa Park, another Orange County Links member, said that most young people who complete the program go on to attend four-year colleges.
