Motorola to Build Chip Plant With Siemens: Motorola Inc. said it is teaming up with the German electronics giant to build a $1.5-billion plant in the United States to jointly manufacture the latest generations of computer memory chips. The site of the plant, which is expected to employ 13,000 people, has not yet been selected, but construction is expected to begin in the middle of next year, Motorola said. The Schaumburg, Ill.-based electronics company also said it is joining with Siemens, International Business Machines Corp. and Toshiba Corp. to jointly develop future versions of advanced semiconductors, including a one-gigabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip. The companies said the four-way venture will build on the success of an existing alliance among IBM, Siemens and Toshiba that developed a fully functional 256-megabit DRAM.
