Letter Embarrasses Moorpark Residents
* We were ashamed to read the latest embarrassing letter from the Moorpark mayor’s spouse (Connie Lawrason, Oct. 29), contending that Scott Montgomery’s plea bargain on felony and misdemeanor crimes does not reflect badly on Moorpark. Really?
What makes Moorpark look even worse is Mayor Paul Lawrason’s injecting his office (albeit self-appointed) into the court in an effort to minimize the crimes and support the admitted felon.
Instead of asking the judge for leniency, a responsible public representative would work objectively with law enforcement to expose all conflicts of interest and try to repair the damaged public trust.
Plea bargains often uncover only the tip of the iceberg. We are still waiting to hear what happened with the second councilman who was asked to provide documentation.
Clint Harper is to be commended for speaking out. He was the only elected Moorpark official who demonstrated the leadership and moral authority this situation demands.
