COLLEGE ROUNDUP : DiGiamarino Helps the Titans Upset Fresno State, 2-1

Joe DiGiamarino scored on a rebound at the 12-minute mark and Alessio Smith converted a two-on-one break in the 88th minute as Cal State Fullerton upset eighth-ranked Fresno State, 2-1, in nonconference men’s soccer. The loss ends a 12-game unbeaten streak for the Bulldogs.

DiGiamarino’s goal came when Fresno State goalkeeper J.J. Wozniak challenged the Titans’ Joshua Stringer on a breakaway and the ball deflected to DiGiamarino, who kicked it in from 20 yards.

Smith clinched the victory on a feed from Tom Helmer, kicking it in from 25 yards. The Titans (11-8) play their final game Thursday at San Diego. Fresno State is 13-4-1.

In the Division III men’s soccer playoffs:

Chapman 2, Colorado College 0--Jason Hospedales and Dustin Kemmerer each scored to lead Chapman, which advances to the Western Regional final against UC San Diego at 1 p.m at UC San Diego.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:

Pepperdine 9, UC Irvine 8 (OT)--Alan Herrmann, a Dana Hills graduate, scored the winning goal with nine seconds left in the first overtime period for sixth-ranked Pepperdine (11-8, 4-4). UC Irvine fell to 12-5, 6-1. Jeff Andrews scored four points for the Anteaters.

In the Southern California men’s tennis regionals:

Irvine duo loses in semifinals--The UC Irvine doubles team of Julian Foxon and Marc Tardif reached the semifinals of the Southern California men’s tennis regionals Saturday, but fell to top-seeded Simon Aspelin and Chris Hill of Pepperdine, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.

Foxon and Tardif defeated Henrik Wagner and Tom Haugland of Arizona, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference men’s cross-country--Southern California College finished third with 69 points, led by Tim Hardin who finished sixth in 25:08. Azusa Pacific’s John Gachao took first place in 24:19 to lead his team to the victory with 22 points.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s cross-country championships--Southern California’s Nikee Pool finished in third in 17:55 to lead her team to a fourth-place finish with 79 points. Westmont’s Miriam Niednagel broke a meet record, finishing in 17:41 to give Westmont the team victory with 34 points.
