Prices in Cornwall

Having returned from a vacation to England, prompted in part by two Times articles--”Walks With Wordsworth” (April 3, 1994) and “England’s Capital of China” (Sept. 11, 1994)--I read with great interest, “England’s Pagan Landscapes” (Sept. 3). It was discouraging, however, to read in the Guidebook that room rates were $115-$185 per night. In the August high season in Lake Windermere, my husband and I stayed in a clean, nicely decorated, well-located hotel for about $60 per night, including full breakfast. Surely Cornwall has something similar.

The article about Cornwall reminded me of a visit my wife and I made there in 1988. There is a small village--more a hamlet--near Penzance, called Mousehole (pronounced “Mowzell” by the British). In the harbor is a long narrow rock, parallel to the shore. From the air it apparently looks like a warship, probably a destroyer. During World War II it was bombed over and over again by the Germans seeking the destruction of the “destroyer.” By concentrating on this rock, the planes never bombed Mousehole and the residents claim that this is how the Allies won the war.
