In other first-round 3-A playoff games:
Bell 7, Birmingham 3--Birmingham was unable to avenge last year’s loss to Bell in the 3-A title game.
Birmingham (4-7) scored first on Luis Salguero’s 34-yard second-quarter field goal. Dustin Magana blocked a Bell punt at the end of the half to help the Braves hold a 3-0 lead.
But in the second half, Birmingham fumbled twice--at Bell’s seven and at its own 28. The second fumble led to a seven-yard touchdown run by Juan Hernandez that gave Bell (5-5-1) the lead with 2:59 remaining.
Birmingham’s final drive ended when the Eagles’ Vern Bernard intercepted an option pass from Emmanuel Evans--the last of the Braves’ four turnovers.
Evans gained 133 yards in 25 carries.
