SANTA ANA — The Los Angeles Times received three awards Thursday from the Orange County Bar Assn. for the newspaper’s coverage of legal issues and the county’s financial collapse.
The Times won both awards in the news reporting category in the bar’s 12th annual media awards competition.
Times staff writers Tracy Weber and Jodi Wilgoren were honored for their story detailing a secret Irvine dinner where top Orange County officials met to discuss the financial meltdown three days before the county declared bankruptcy.
Times staff writer Henry Weinstein was honored for a story explaining the legal ramifications of the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
In the feature news category, Times staff writer Lee Romney received an award for detailing the escalating child custody wars that play out in police department lobbies--and the problems those conflicts cause for local authorities.
The bar also gave awards to Ed Miskevich and Jim Cooper of KOCE-TV in the television category, and to Orange County Register reporter Bryon MacWilliams for a feature news story.
