In a smooth transfer of power, the City Council on Tuesday unanimously elected Mayor Pro Tem Wyatt T. Hart as the new mayor and Councilman David M. Swerdlin as the new mayor pro tem.
The action came after the outgoing mayor, Carolyn Nash, received a standing ovation from the council, staff and members of the audience.
“She asked so little and gave so much,” Councilwoman Collene Campbell said of Nash, citing the professionalism, flexibility and leadership that Nash displayed during her year as mayor.
Hart, who served for 21 years with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department before retiring in 1987, was elected to the council in 1994. Before that, he served about six years on the Planning Commission.
