IRVINE — Mater Dei, despite making one fourth-quarter field goal, beat Los Alamitos, 50-44, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Monday at UC Irvine. It was the Monarchs’ 15th consecutive victory.
Los Alamitos’ A.D. Lamoureux tied the score, 44-44, with a one-handed five-footer with 1 minute 23 seconds left and was later involved in the key play of the game.
Tom Lippold made two free throws with a minute left and Kevin Augustine made one of two with 32 seconds left to give Mater Dei (15-1) a 47-44 lead.
At the other end, Lamoureux drove the right side, made a layup, and thought he was fouled and would have a chance to tie it with a free throw. Instead, he was called for an offensive foul, which nullified the basket with 22 seconds left.
Lippold made two more free throws with 20 seconds left for the Monarchs, who made nine of 11 in the fourth quarter.
Lamoureux had 13 points and Adam Seaton added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Los Alamitos (10-4), which shot 27% (17 of 63).
Augustine had 16 points for Mater Dei, which shot 34% (16 of 47).
“I don’t think either team played up to its potential,” Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight said.
