Varya Cohn; Philanthropist, Donor to L.A. Art Museums

Varya Cohn, 89, philanthropist who donated major works to Los Angeles art museums. Born in Vienna, she grew up in Russia, Finland and Berlin. Immigrating to the United States in 1939, she married international businessman Hans Cohn, who died in 1994. The couple amassed an important collection and over the years donated the bulk of it to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Other works were given to the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Cohns’ eclectic collection, focusing on objects with complex sculptural details and exquisite craftsmanship, was particularly strong in ancient art. On Dec. 28 in Los Angeles.
