Deadline Passes for Voter Registration

There were no hordes of prospective voters at the county registrar’s office on Monday, the last day to register for March 26 elections.

But plenty of forms still made their way to the office, according to Bruce Bradley, Ventura County’s assistant registrar of voters.

“About 2,300 people have registered since Jan. 1,” Bradley said. “That brings the total number of voters in the county to about 355,000.”

The spring election features a number of primary races for legislative and supervisorial seats. Helping to boost registration figures were several controversial ballot measures, including the Weldon Canyon landfill issue and the battle between Community Memorial Hospital and the Ventura County Medical Center.

“Primary voters tend to be older, established voters who don’t rush in to register,” Bradley said. “But issues can bring people in.”

The majority of residents registered at about 200 locations throughout the county, including numerous fire stations, city halls and post offices, Bradley said.
