With Barber Pitching, It’s No Close Shave for CLU

Cal Lutheran senior right-hander Andrew Barber, who tossed a no-hitter last week, pitched a four-hit shutout Saturday as the Kingsmen swept Occidental in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader at Occidental.
Barber (3-1) struck out eight in Cal Lutheran’s 8-0 victory in the second game. Barber, who had a one-hitter through seven innings, has 19 strikeouts in his last 18 innings.
Cal Lutheran (15-4-1, 12-0 in conference play) won the first game, 6-4.
In the opener, Rik Work had three hits and drove in four runs, including the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, to support the four-hit pitching of Richard Bell (4-0).
Pepperdine 1-5, Cal State Los Angeles 5-2--Gerardo Gonzalez, Dennis Konrady and Rob Reid each collected two hits in the second game to give the Waves (13-11) a split at Pepperdine.
Freshman right-hander Andy Shibilo, making his first start in two weeks because of a shoulder injury, allowed one hit and struck out five in five scoreless innings.
Eric Brubaker struck out two of the five batters he faced during the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his fourth save.
Glenn Posein pitched four scoreless innings in relief to lead the Golden Eagles (15-12) in the first game.
Pepperdine’s Jason LeBlanc (1-2) pitched a complete game, allowing all five runs, only two earned.
Valley 8, Glendale 7--Steve Zorn hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs for the Monarchs (6-11, 3-2) in a Western State Conference South Division victory at home. Valley’s Clint Marcus (2-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs.
Moorpark 3, Ventura 1--Starter Kary Kozlowski (1-0) pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one run, as the Raiders (6-9, 2-1) beat the Pirates (8-7, 2-3) in a WSC North Division game at Moorpark.
Joel Mellinger had two hits and two stolen bases for Moorpark.
Oxnard 13, Hancock 6--The Condors (11-5, 4-1) pounded out 15 hits, 14 of them singles, in a WSC North Division game at Oxnard.
Jake Spahr had three hits and four RBIs, and Eric Farias had two hits, two RBIs and scored three times.
