VRHPOLJE, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Excavation workers assisted by United Nations war crimes experts unearthed 15 bodies Friday at a mass grave site in northwestern Bosnia.
The digging at a site near a blown-up bridge over the Sana River began Tuesday after North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops working on a new bridge discovered bodies buried less than three feet beneath the surface.
The area is believed to contain four larger graves and several smaller ones with bodies of hundreds of Bosnian Muslims who went missing during Serbian “ethnic cleansing” in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992.
The bodies, which were found in an advanced stage of decomposition, were taken to a pathology ward in Sanski Most for identification.
Forensic experts of the U.N. criminal tribunal in The Hague are working with Bosnian authorities on the excavations.
