A Hawthorne church plans to open a high school at an old warehouse it recently purchased.
The Light & Life Community Church plans to open the Christian school with 50 students this fall and triple enrollment over the next three years.
The church, which was founded three years ago by Pastor John Richardson, opened a school for students in preschool through eighth grade three years ago and is expanding its program to include a high school because many church members do not want to send their children to Leuzinger High School, which has been the site of several racial incidents during the last several years.
“There is a need for this kind of school since there are a lot of high schools kids in the area and only one high school,” Richardson said. “The only option people have is Leuzinger and many of them have expressed concern that they are scared of the problems at the school. We wanted to create an alternative.”. . .
