. . . President Ronald Reagan, via telephone, launched a Newport boat parade to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the harbor.
Newport Harbor was dedicated in 1936, after workers dredged 8.5 million tons of sand and 50,000 tons of rock from the harbor. In 1939, the harbor survived a hurricane that wiped out Newport and Balboa piers.
