New Chamber Chief to Keep Focus on Services

Neighborhood unity and improving services for youths and senior citizens are among the priorities of Jerome Catlin, the new president of the Midway City Chamber of Commerce and Homeowners Assn.

Catlin was elected this week to head the organization, which serves the 8,200 residents of the unincorporated area along Beach Boulevard between Huntington Beach and Westminster.

“We want to continue the programs we started this year for seniors and young people,” he said. “We want to increase our membership so that neighbors know neighbors. I think that’s the best kind of Neighborhood Watch you can have.”

Midway City is one of the oldest unincorporated communities in the county. While other islands are considering annexation or incorporation in the wake of the county bankruptcy, Catlin said, Midway City residents favor the status quo.

Catlin sees a busy year ahead. Plans are proceeding for the second annual summer festival Aug. 17 at Roger R. Stanton Park, and several residents are also beginning work on an official history of the community.

In addition to Catlin, chamber members elected Ryal Wheeler as first vice president in charge of publicity; Hank Pendergrass as second vice president in charge of programs; Cleo Rinker as third vice president in charge of membership; Gertie Wood as fourth vice president in charge of refreshments; Marion Flint as secretary; and Alan Ummel as chamber treasurer.
