WASHINGTON, D.C. : Clinton, New Senate GOP Leader Confer

President Clinton had his first meeting with Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), but they failed to narrow differences on such major issues as health care, welfare and the minimum wage. “I don’t think it was really intended to be that kind of meeting,” Lott said after the 45-minute session with the president. Other senior Republicans and Democrats in Congress also participated, although House Speaker Newt Gingrich skipped the meeting to attend a political event. House Majority Leader Dick Armey said the meeting reminded him of the song “Getting to Know You” from the movie “My Fair Lady.”
