Griffey Returns From Disabled List
Seattle center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., on the disabled list since June 20 because of a broken hamate bone in his right wrist, was activated after Saturday’s 6-4 loss to the Angels and will start in today’s series finale. Reliever Lee Guetterman was designated for assignment to make room for Griffey.
Griffey was batting .299 with 23 home runs and 60 RBIs when he was injured June 19. With ace Randy Johnson and No. 2 pitcher Chris Bosio expected to return by the end of the month, the Mariners, who have remained highly competitive despite a slew of injuries, should be near full strength for the pennant race in the American League West.
