One Browns’ Fan Allowed Auction to Go to His Head

They still remember Art Modell in Cleveland--in their own way.
When the bric-a-brac from Cleveland Stadium was auctioned off, Brown fan Ed Gudenas bought the contents of Modell’s stadium box, including the couch, chairs, microwave and refrigerator, for $1,200.
“I’d like to keep it intact,” he said. “Maybe when they build the new stadium, I’ll put it in there and charge a dollar for each hit with a sledgehammer.”
Modell’s personal toilet went for $2,700, prompting former coach Jerry Glanville to comment, “I imagine that would have been a hotter item if his head was in it.”

One to another: Stan Musial will be the honorary grand marshal of the Pulaski Day parade today in New York and will lead more than 100,000 marchers up Fifth Avenue in the nation’s largest Polish-American celebration.
The parade, as it always does, will stop at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where Musial, possibly the greatest of all St. Louis Cardinals, will get to meet another Cardinal, John O’Connor.

Double talk: The University of North Texas has an offensive lineman named Hunter Hunter. But he’s from San Antonio, not Walla Walla.

Getting old: The Buffalo Bills’ Jim Kelly is 36 and is getting a little annoyed at hearing people say he’s getting too old to be an NFL force.
“If an injury happens to a younger player,” Kelly said, “it’s like, ‘Oh, he’ll be back.’ If it happens to an older player, he’s getting too old and the injury’s because he’s too old.”

Big brother: Chicago Bear safety Mark Carrier was standing on the sideline in street clothes during an exhibition game when he was informed he’d better do something about his shoes.
It seems the NFL allows only two brands of shoe on the sideline and the shoes Carrier was wearing were neither. He was told to cover the logos or leave.
What’s the NFL rule if he goes barefoot?

Look who’s here: Two weeks ago, Julio Cesar Chavez was in hiding to prevent the Mexican government from arresting him on a $1.4-million tax-evasion charge. Then fight promoter Bob Arum negotiated to turn over Chavez’s purse--$1.4 million--for his fight next Saturday night at the Pond against Joey Gamache.
Since then, Chavez has been as visible as a politician--last Thursday night at the Dodger game, Saturday for a sparring session at the Pond followed by the Padre game in San Diego, today at the Sports Arena for a fight card and Thursday night he will be at the Galaxy playoff game in the Rose Bowl.

And finally: A reader wrote to Mike Lupica, part-time ESPN commentator and full-time New York Daily News columnist, asking when it might be Lupica’s turn to carry Kerri Strug.
“I watch those ESPN commercials and keep hoping [Keith] Olbermann or somebody will fumble the adorable little waif,” he answered.
