Prop. 207

“Initiative Would Guarantee Lawyers Could Set Own Fees” (Sept. 24) states that Prop. 207 does little more than restate current law when it comes to frivolous lawsuits. This is true. However, voters should know that there is a trick two-thirds vote provision that would hamstring the Legislature from taking any future steps to curtail meritless litigation.
This, plus Prop. 207’s prohibition on future legislative control of fee arrangements and attorney-client contracts, puts 207 high on the list of propositions to defeat this November. Prop. 207 was written by and for the trial lawyers. It would not benefit plaintiffs and consumers who need access to justice at a reasonable cost.
