High Court Votes to Fire Attorney General

The Supreme Court voted to dismiss the nation’s attorney general and bar him from holding public office for five years. The court said that Orlando Vasquez used phony witnesses in an investigation to try to frame prosecutor Alfonso Valdivieso, a leader in a crackdown against drugs and corruption. Vasquez is also under investigation by Valdivieso’s office for allegedly accepting money from the Cali drug cartel to finance his unsuccessful 1994 Senate bid.
