GRANADA HILLS — A San Fernando man was killed Saturday when a commercial truck accidentally backed into him at the landfill where he worked guiding trucks, authorities said.
The accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. at the Sunshine Canyon Landfill in the 14700 block of North San Fernando Road, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The man, identified only as a 22- to 30-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene, Humphrey said.
He was a temporary worker, and it wasn’t known how long he had worked there.
“He suffered massive, total-body trauma,” Humphrey said.
Humphrey said the driver of the truck was visibly shaken and “sat with his head in his hands for an extended period of time.”
The truck was a 25-ton-capacity, privately owned vehicle of the type commonly used to lift dumpsters, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office was still working on its investigation late Saturday, according to a spokesman.
