Boston College Probes Alleged Gambling

Defensive back Kiernan Speight, named in reports concerning possible gambling by members of the Boston College football team, said Sunday night his name would be cleared. University officials were mum after meeting with investigators most of the day. WHDH-TV in Boston, however, reported that “the school was looking into five players that gambled on games and may have bet on BC to lose.” Said Speight: “I just want to get it resolved. I want them to get down to the bottom of it. I want my name cleared.”. . . . Syracuse and Virginia Tech moved back into the Associated Press’ Top 25 college football poll and West Virginia fell out. Florida remained No. 1 for the seventh straight week, and the Top 10 was unchanged. Syracuse (5-2), off a 30-7 victory over West Virginia, returned to the rankings at No. 24, while Virginia Tech is back in at No. 25 after a 47-16 win over Southwestern Louisiana. West Virginia (7-2) dropped out after being ranked 18th.
