Top Tennis Player Upset in Regionals

San Diego’s Yvonne Doyle upset Arizona’s Vicky Maes, the nation’s top-ranked player, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of the Southern California women’s tennis regionals at UC Irvine.
Doyle will play UCLA’s Annica Cooper in today’s semifinal beginning at 9 a.m. Cooper defeated Katy Propstra of Arizona State, 6-3, 7-6, in Friday’s quarterfinal.
In the other semifinal, the nation’s 12th-ranked player, Marianne Vallin of Nevada Las Vegas, will face Arizona’s Karen Goldstein. Vallin was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Pepperdine’s Zsofia Csapo. Goldstein defeated USC’s Ditta Huber, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
In doubles, top-seeded Isabella Petrov and Angela Lawrence of Pepperdine advanced to today’s quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Long Beach State’s Amanda Parson and Jing Chen.
In the Simpson women’s basketball tournament:
Pacific Christian 50, Simpson 44--Nicole Kubota scored 17 points in a pool-play victory for Pacific Christian (2-0). Teammate Adriene Penn scored 16 points for Pacific Christian.
