Coach: Alan Clinton (12th year).
1995-96: 14-3 overall, 5-0 in the Century League; the Vanguards won their fifth league title and were runners-up to Calvary Chapel in the Division I Dual-Meet championship.
Key returners: Nick Bradley, 135, Sr.; Jerry Fenton, 125, Sr.; Jever Mendoza, 152, Jr.; David Saucedo, Hwt., Sr.; Andres Sepulveda, 103, So.; Nik Wassilien, 119, Sr.; Charlie Williams, 145, Jr.
Key newcomers: Eddie Amaya, 125, So.; Bobby Belt, 215, Sr.; Paul Bogart, 103, Sr.; Leon Bojorquez, 189, Jr.; Alex Cesa, 171, Jr.; Kevin Dykes, 140, So.; John Montes, 112, Jr.; Tony Rubalcaba, 112, So.; Matt Shannon, 189, Jr.; Alex Solorio, Hwt., So.; Erik Svidal, 145, Jr.; Don Villa, 125, Sr.
Outlook: With four experienced seniors back in the lineup, and what he calls a “great group of juniors and sophomores,” Clinton is optimistic about the season. Bradley and Williams, who both were league champions and Southern Section qualifiers, will be keys to El Modena’s success. But Clinton is also expecting some big things from Saucedo and Wassilien, both of whom finished second in league finals.
