Moon Shots Lead Orange Over Dana Hills

Tournament most valuable player Malcom Moon scored 18 points to help Orange hand Dana Hills its first loss of the season, 59-46, in the championship game of the Century boys’ basketball tournament Saturday at Century High.

The Panthers (6-1) broke open a close game by outscoring the Dolphins (6-1), 21-10, in the third quarter. Juan Dotson added 12 points for Orange.

In other Century tournament games:

Magnolia 77, Laguna Hills 68--Magnolia Coach Al Walin recorded his 300th victory in the fifth-place game. Art Garland scored 23 points for Magnolia (6-2).

University 75, Century 72--Nima Adloo scored 24 points and Eric Palmer had 23 for University in the third-place game.

In the Cerritos Valley Christian Tournament:

Anaheim 63, Covina Western Christian 44--Tru Nguyen had 31 points, including six three-pointers, for Anaheim (5-2) in the consolation final.

In the Converse Classic at Trabuco Hills High:

Capistrano Valley 71, Esperanza 56--Dan Galvanoni scored 33 points for the Cougars (1-3) in a consolation game.

In the Fullerton tournament:

Whittier California 51, Fullerton 48--Alberto Hildago made a 35-foot shot at the buzzer to lift California (7-1) past Fullerton (3-2).

David Brookman had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Fullerton, which led by five points with two minutes left but couldn’t hang on.

Marina 68, La Mirada 44--Scot Austin scored 21 points for Marina (7-1) in the third-place game.

In the Tournament of Champions:

Los Alamitos 67, Antelope Valley 51--Adam Seaton scored 17 points for Los Alamitos (7-1) in the third-place game.

Villa Park 67, Long Beach Jordan 38--Matt Poutsma and Eric Chenowith each scored 13 points for Villa Park (7-1) in the fifth-place game.

Servite 64, Fontana 59--Steve Shea had 21 points and 17 rebounds for Servite (5-3) in the consolation final.

In the Fairmont girls’ basketball tournament:

Capistrano Valley Christian 59, Los Angeles Ribet Academy 39--April Flanagan and Hayley Hall each scored 14 points in the championship game for the Eagles, who broke the game open by outscoring Ribet, 19-6, in the third quarter.

Most valuable player Leanne Bennet scored 29 points for Ribet Academy.

Connelly 44, Fairmont 27--Jamie Poon scored 13 points for Connelly in the third-place game.

In the Great Alaska tournament:

Marina 69, Chugiak (Alaska) 56--Marisa Emde scored 22 points and Natalie Nakase, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 21 points for Marina (6-1) in the third-place game.

In the South Coast Holiday Classic:

Esperanza 58, University 40--Leah Combs had 23 points and nine rebounds for Esperanza (5-1) in the third-place game.

Capistrano Valley 68, Newport Harbor 67--Jenny Jennings had 32 points, including seven three-pointers, for the Cougars (4-1) in the fifth-place game. Jennings’ final three-pointer gave the Cougars a 68-66 lead with 35 seconds remaining.

In a nonleague game:

El Toro 52, Costa Mesa 49--Giulianna Mendiola made a three-pointer at the buzzer for El Toro (7-0).
