Only two months after the dismissal of Jim Harrick, the Bruins open Pac-10 play with the kind of contest they were able to breeze through in their past two conference-winning seasons. Defensive-minded Washington State is coming to Southern California after winning one of three games in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu over the weekend. Look for Toby Bailey to get the defensive matchup against Isaac Fontaine, who is averaging 21.4 points. UCLA interim Coach Steve Lavin benched starters Kris Johnson, J.R. Henderson and Jelani McCoy for the first 11 minutes of the Bruins’ last game, a victory over Morgan State, after the three were late for a shoot-around. Lavin says he isn’t looking for sudden attitude adjustment, just progress. “What I have seen is the players trying,” Lavin said. “They’re running to the timeout when the game’s close. The fruits of all the hard work and labor aren’t going to happen overnight. We’re making strides.”
