A 34-year-old man who died in a head-on collision on Santiago Canyon Road was identified Friday as Armando Sanchez Castro of Yorba Linda.
Castro was sitting between the driver and another passenger in a stake-bed truck heading north on Santiago Canyon Road near Modjeska Canyon Road about 5:30 p.m. Thursday when they were struck by a pickup truck traveling on the wrong side of the road, the California Highway Patrol said.
The pickup driver, who has not been cited pending an ongoing investigation, may have been fatigued and didn’t know he was driving on the wrong side of the road, CHP spokeswoman Angel Johnson said. Both vehicles were traveling about 55 mph, which is within the speed limit in the area located west of the Cleveland National Forest, investigators said.
“We don’t expect drugs or alcohol to be a factor,” Johnson said.
The pickup driver and the other two men in the stake-bed truck were critically injured and were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana and Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, authorities said.
