Palisades Stops Revenge Effort by Canoga Park

TIMES STAFF WRITER

It wasn’t the revenge outcome the Canoga Park High boys’ basketball team had planned, but it wasn’t exactly a rerun either.

Pat Farzaneh’s three-point attempt bounced off the back of the rim at the buzzer, allowing Palisades High to claim an 84-83 victory in overtime in a nonleague game Friday night at Canoga Park.

Palisades (14-2), ranked No. 3 in the City Section, previously whipped Canoga Park by 32 points in a semifinal game of the Beverly Hills tournament a month ago.

This game was different from the start, but had the same ending.

Tied after regulation, 72-72, the lead changed with every overtime basket and Eurskine Robinson’s layup gave Palisades an 84-83 edge with 12 seconds to play.

Canoga Park’s Carloes Harper hit four of five shots in overtime and was driving for a go-ahead basket near the free-throw line when he tripped over Robinson and lost the ball. Robinson corralled the ball, but stepped out of bounds with two seconds left.

Farzaneh inbounded the ball to Jeff Turner, who passed it back to Farzaneh to take the last shot.

Coach Ralph Turner said the first option was a lob inside to David Redmond, who dominated despite sitting out nearly 10 minutes in the second half because of foul trouble. Redmond, who finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots, was covered, so the second option was Farzaneh.

Harper, a 6-foot-4 swingman who leads the region in scoring, was spectacular, finishing with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Quantee Stansberry added 19 points, including four three-pointers.

Palisades, playing without two starters, got 21 points and 11 rebounds from Shannon Johnson, a transfer from North Hollywood who made his debut after sitting out 15 games for personal reasons. Philipp Czernin added 28 points.
