Jewish Settlers’ Rally Mourns Hebron Pact

Jewish settlers and their supporters gathered to lament Israel’s troop withdrawal from Hebron. More than 1,000 people, some ripping their shirts in the traditional expression of grief, rallied outside the Cave of the Patriarchs, a Hebron shrine holy to Jews and Muslims. Israel withdrew from 80% of Hebron on Friday, leaving soldiers downtown to protect about 450 Jewish settlers living among the city’s 100,000 Palestinians. The Palestinian Authority security chief in the West Bank, Jibril Rajoub, said that he would make Hebron safe for all, including settlers--as long as they do not provoke or attack Palestinians.
