Council to Review Bids for City Offices Project

The city has received 17 bids for a project to build an addition to the Civic Building, and the City Council may award a contract after reviewing the proposals at its meeting today.

The plan calls for adding about 1,500 square feet to the civic building at 17855 Santiago Blvd. That structure now contains all city offices as well as the City Council chambers.

The addition would make space for the Orange County sheriff’s deputy who provides police service for the city and a room for the city’s Community Access Television and city-owned TV equipment.

There would also be a new office for the city Building Department, a conference room and a storage space.

The City Council also will consider an option to the construction bids to include expansion of the city’s library.

The bidders were asked to quote a price for adding about 360 square feet to the library structure, which adjoins the Civic Building.

City Manager Fred Maley estimated last year that the Civic Building addition would cost about $105,000 and the library expansion about $20,000.

City Clerk Kaysene Miller said the bids received are all higher than those amounts.

The council also will discuss a proposal to prohibit cars from stopping and discharging passengers on parts of Taft Avenue.

Miller said Taft Avenue is a school area, and the Sheriff’s Department has recommended the no-stopping measure to ensure student safety.
