Kennedy Grabs Victory From Cleveland

Mike Calloway’s 40-foot shot missed, but teammate Dwight Smith grabbed the rebound and scored with two seconds to play, giving Kennedy High a 71-70 upset over Cleveland in a Northwest Valley Conference basketball game Wednesday night.
Calloway had 26 points for the Golden Cougars (8-9, 3-2 in conference play).
Donald Holt had 37 points and 16 rebounds for the Cavaliers (15-5, 3-2), ranked fifth in The Times’ regional poll.
In other Northwest Valley Conference games:
Taft 57, Chatsworth 55--Amir Bar-Netzer scored 23 points, including the winning shot with eight seconds remaining, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Toreadors (12-6, 3-2) at Taft.
Granada Hills 56, San Fernando 48--The Highlanders (10-8, 3-2) went on a 10-2 run in the final two minutes to pull away at San Fernando.
Leon Pimky scored 11 points for Granada Hills.
Luis De La Rosa scored 18 for San Fernando (9-9, 3-2).
In other games:
Monroe 87, Canoga Park 84--Damien Ritter scored all seven of his points in overtime, including two free throws with 10 seconds left, to lift the Vikings (7-11, 4-1) to an upset in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe.
Ritter, a junior point guard, missed a last-second shot in regulation that could have won the game. He finished with nine assists.
Monroe’s John Innis made a three-point basket with seven seconds to play in regulation to tie the score, 72-72. Canoga Park was called for traveling, but Ritter missed a 35-foot shot at the buzzer.
Ennis finished with 24 points to help the Vikings to their fourth consecutive victory. Forward Mark Cumbiss had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Monroe.
David Redmond scored 29 points and Carloes Harper added 21 for the Hunters (11-9, 3-2).
“We hustled and played a scrappy game,” said Monroe Coach Paul Graber, whose team overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit.
Grant 68, North Hollywood 64--Gilbert Arenas had 33 points--including five in the second overtime--10 rebounds and six assists to pace the Lancers (6-11, 3-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.
Keron Wilkerson scored 20 points for the Huskies (7-11, 1-4).
Sylmar 88, Van Nuys 58--Daron Wilson had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Branden Jacobs had 13 points, 10 assists and six steals to lead the Spartans (9-9, 3-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.
Poly 79, Reseda 56--Ellis Richardson scored 18 points and Eric Owens added 17 for the Parrots (14-5, 5-0) in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly.
Jamaal Washington had 25 points for Reseda (0-15, 0-5).
Oxnard 77, Rio Mesa 68--Ross Randolph scored 27 points and Chris O’Brien added 19 to help the Yellowjackets (9-9, 3-6) snap Rio Mesa’s 11-game winning streak in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.
Tyrone Nunnery had 21 points, including four three-point baskets in the fourth quarter, for the Spartans (14-4, 8-1), the region’s fourth-ranked team.
Oxnard led, 58-44, at the end of the third quarter, but Rio Mesa narrowed the deficit to 70-66 with 2:30 to play.
O’Brien made four free throws down the stretch to help Oxnard pull away.
Hueneme 40, Dos Pueblos 39--Matt Ramirez hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Vikings (4-14, 1-8) a Channel League win at Dos Pueblos (13-8, 7-2).
The game-winner was Ramirez’s third three-pointer of the game. He finished with nine points. Paul McRae led Hueneme with 11 points, including three three-pointers. Dos Pueblos had been in a slow-down offense for the final four minutes attempting to protect a 38-34 lead.
Ventura 61, San Marcos 50--Christian Gallagher scored 20 points for the Cougars (11-9, 5-4) in a Channel League victory.
Bell-Jeff 86, Murphy 63--Junior Ruben Douglas scored 31 points and sophomore Kent Dennis had 24 points and eight assists to help the Guards (16-6, 8-0) to their ninth consecutive victory in a Santa Fe League game at Bell-Jeff.
Camarillo 70, Thousand Oaks 52--Justin Beach scored 23 points and Mariano It had 18 points and eight assists for the Scorpions (10-9, 3-6) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks (10-10, 3-6).
Josh Armour had 11 points for Thousand Oaks.
Simi Valley 82, Westlake 54--Bret Mitchell scored 25 points for the Pioneers (17-2, 7-2), the No. 3-ranked team in the region, in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
Agoura 60, Royal 38--Marcus Helfman scored 19 points and John Barry had 12 points to lead the Chargers (8-9, 5-4) in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
Gabe Gapol had eight points to lead the Highlanders (12-9, 4-5).
