Council to Name Petrikin’s Successor as Mayor Tonight
- Share via
The City Council plans to appoint a new mayor tonight, two weeks after Councilman James D. Petrikin resigned the post for health reasons.
Petrikin will remain a member of the council as he recovers from the hip and spinal surgeries he has had in recent years.
The mayor’s post rotates annually among the five members of the council. Mayors lead council meetings but do not have more legislative power than their colleagues. The job, however, is time-consuming and requires many public appearances.
If Mayor Pro Tem Laurann Cook becomes the mayor, another council member will be appointed to her position.
