City May Contract for After-School Services

The City Council tonight will consider awarding about $69,000 in contracts to the Campfire Boys and Girls, Orange County Council and the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley Inc. to provide after-school and recreational programs.

City staff have recommended that the council award the Camp Fire Boys and Girls a $51,120 contract to provide enhanced on-site recreation programs at Harold Ambuehl, Del Obispo and San Juan elementary schools, three campuses where the organization currently runs after-school activities.

The council will also consider whether to award a contract of about $18,000 to the Boys and Girls Club to provide new teen programs at Marco F. Forster Middle School and to extend hours of operation and after-school activities at its center on El Camino Real.

Last year the Community Services Department reported that some city-run after-school programs drew too few children to operate efficiently and duplicated services offered at other agencies.

The assessment found that by contracting with an outside provider for after-school services, the city could increase student enrollment, reduce rates, offer a higher level of service to the community and improve the cost effectiveness of the programs, according to a city report.
