University High Takes First Place in County Math Competition

University High School won the 42nd annual High School Mathematics Meet during the weekend at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.
The Irvine team beat 16 Orange County high schools and more than 100 students to win the invitational for the first time. University placed ninth last year.
Alex Chen, Mike Chen, Michael Kang and Joseph Yu competed on the University team, coached by Gerhard Alms.
Fullerton’s Troy High School finished second and Huntington Beach’s Edison High, last year’s champion, finished third.
David Farris, a junior at Edison, took first in the individual competition for the second year in a row--the first competitor to do that in eight years. Matthew Lee and Clinton Conley of Troy High finished second and third respectively.
