Driver Critical After Veering Off Freeway

A 45-year-old Ventura woman was in critical condition Thursday at the Ventura County Medical Center after veering her car off the Ventura Freeway and down a 50-foot embankment near Emma Wood State Beach.
Kathleen Summers was driving northbound on the freeway about 4:50 a.m. when she drifted off the roadway, said Officer Dave Cockrill of the California Highway Patrol.
After her car rolled down the embankment, it came to rest next to some railroad tracks, Cockrill said.
Summers had to be cut free of her car by firefighters, and the rescue forced the delay of a freight train, Cockrill said.
California Highway Patrol investigators are looking into whether Summers was driving under the influence of alcohol, he said.
