City to Welcome Foreign Diplomats

The public is invited to join in the festivities Saturday as an international group of diplomats and their families tour the historic sights of the city.

About 75 members of the diplomatic consular corps from Argentina, Chile, Estonia, Germany, Indonesia, Netherlands, Switzerland and Uruguay are expected to travel by train from their offices in Los Angeles and Orange County to spend the day in San Juan Capistrano.

Sponsored by the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce and International Visitors and Protocol Foundation, the event is the first of its kind for the town as it introduces itself to the international community in an effort to encourage business and tourism from abroad.

Mayor David M. Swerdlin will welcome the visiting diplomats at 10 a.m. at the Capistrano Depot before the guests proceed to docent tours of Mission San Juan Capistrano and guided tours of downtown by Historical Society members.

At 1:30 p.m., the public is invited to join the diplomats and their families at the Historic Towne Center Park for the staging of an old-fashioned gunfight.

After the mock fight, the group is scheduled to take a trip through the Los Rios Historic District. They will feast at a western-style barbecue before they leave around 5 p.m.
