CHANDIGARH, India — Seventy people heading to a wedding were killed when a truck plunged into a 165-foot gorge in the mountainous Himachal Pradesh state in northern India, police said today.
The accident happened late Thursday as the wedding party was traveling to the bride’s village of Hamirpur, 250 miles north of New Delhi. Eight people were hospitalized.
Neither the bride nor groom were killed. The groom was traveling in a separate car, local administrator Manoj Kumar Shrivastava said.
Rescue workers had retrieved 65 bodies, and five bodies remained buried under the wreckage of the truck, Shrivastava said.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
Indian villagers often hire trucks to transport large groups for weddings and religious festivals.
