GOP Conservative Wins House Seat

SANTA FE, N.M. — A congressional seat held by one Democrat since its creation in 1982 has been won by a conservative Republican minister, in part because of a strong finish by a third-party candidate. Bill Redmond, 43, won the special election Tuesday to succeed Rep. Bill Richardson, who resigned in February to become U.N. ambassador.
Unofficial returns had Redmond with 43%, or 43,469 votes, to 40%, or 40,423 votes, for Democrat Eric Serna. Green Party candidate Carol Miller had 17%, or 17,079 votes, and five others split the remainder.
Democrats have a 2-to-1 registration edge over Republicans in the northern New Mexico district, which is three-fifths Latino or Indian. The House now has 228 Republicans, 206 Democrats, and one independent.
