Yankee Attorney Rebukes Owners

George Steinbrenner’s attorney criticized baseball’s executive council Wednesday, saying some owners “are trying to take some of the Yankees’ money for their teams.”

A day after Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball’s ruling body for suing the sport, Yankee attorney David Boies said the suit probably will be served within several days, which would lead to an injunction hearing. The Yankees and Adidas sued after baseball told them they could sell T-shirts at Yankee Stadium containing logos of both the team and the company.

“Every member of the executive council has an interest in the outcome,” Boies said. “One of the cardinal principles in this country is you shouldn’t have an interest when you’re a judge in the case.”

Acting Commissioner Bud Selig declined to reply to Boies’ remarks.

Texas put Mark McLemore on the 15-day disabled list effective today. McLemore has a torn ligament in his right hand that has contributed to his .174 batting average. The Rangers will activate infielder Domingo Cedeno today to replace McLemore. Also, Ranger designated hitter Mickey Tettleton had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. There is no timetable for his return. . . . Toronto right-hander Juan Guzman left the Blue Jays for an examination of his sore right shoulder by orthopedic specialist James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Guzman was forced to leave his start Tuesday night in Detroit because of a recurrence of soreness in his pitching shoulder. . . . Two Baltimore police officers charged with scalping Oriole tickets during the playoffs last year resigned from the force. The resignations were part of a plea agreement for Jerry Tarud and David Brendel.
